Root Canals & Apicoectomy

Root canal therapy and apicoectomy are treatments used to save teeth that are severely infected or damaged. These procedures focus on removing infection, relieving pain, and preserving your natural tooth whenever possible.

What is root canal therapy?

Root canal therapy is a procedure used to treat infection inside the tooth. When the pulp becomes inflamed or infected due to deep decay, cracks, trauma, or repeated dental procedures, a root canal is often the best way to save the tooth. During treatment, the infected tissue is removed, the inside of the tooth is carefully cleaned and disinfected, and the canal is sealed to prevent future infection.

Benefits of root canal treatment
  • Relieves pain and infection
  • Preserves your natural tooth
  • Prevents the spread of infection
  • Restores normal biting and chewing function
What is an apicoectomy?

An apicoectomy is a minor surgical procedure that may be recommended if a tooth does not heal properly after root canal therapy. It involves removing the tip of the tooth’s root and the surrounding infected tissue. This procedure is typically considered when infection persists or returns and conventional retreatment is not effective.

When is each procedure recommended?
  • Root canal therapy is usually the first line of treatment for an infected tooth.
  • An apicoectomy may be recommended when infection remains after a root canal or when retreatment is not possible.
  • Both procedures aim to save the tooth and avoid extraction whenever possible.
What to expect during treatment
  • Assessment and imaging to evaluate the infection and determine the appropriate treatment.
  • Root canal therapy is performed first in most cases to clean and seal the tooth.
  • If needed, an apicoectomy is performed to remove remaining infection at the root tip.
  • Local anesthesia is used to ensure comfort during both procedures.
Recovery and aftercare
  • Mild tenderness or swelling is normal and usually subsides within a few days.
  • Follow post-treatment instructions carefully to support healing.
  • Good oral hygiene and regular dental visits help maintain long -term results.
